embedding — A way of turning a piece of text into a list of numbers that captures its meaning, so a computer can compare it to other pieces of text.
Embeddings are how RAG finds the right bits of your documents. Two pieces of text with similar meanings end up with similar numbers, so "find me things like this" becomes a maths problem a computer can solve fast.
