bash — One of the most common shells. The default on most Linux machines and older Macs.

Why you care

When a guide says "run this bash command," it means "type this into your terminal." Most shells accept the same basic commands, so bash instructions usually work in zsh too.

When you hear it

"Paste this bash command." "It's a bash script."
